The Court of Appeal of Sri Lanka, commonly known as the Appeal Court, is the second most senior court in the Sri Lankan legal system, with only the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka above it.
The Court of Appeal Act of Sri Lanka (No. 44 of 1971) established the Court of Appeal as the second-highest court, defining its appellate jurisdiction from High Courts, lower Courts and tribunals, replacing the Privy Council appeals, and setting out its structure, judges, and procedures, governing the appeals process from lower courts to the Supreme Court. This Act, along with constitutional provisions (Article 138-147), grants the Court of Appeal the power to hear appeals, issue writs, and handle various applications, forming a crucial part of Sri Lanka’s judiciary.
