Powers & Jurisdiction

The District Court Colombo exercises civil jurisdiction within the Colombo judicial district in accordance with the Judicature Act and other written laws of Sri Lanka. The Court functions as a court of first instance for a wide range of civil matters and is responsible for hearing, determining, and adjudicating disputes arising under civil law.

Civil Jurisdiction

The District Court has authority to hear and determine civil cases relating to property disputes, contracts, debt recovery, damages, trusts, landlord and tenant matters, inheritance disputes, and other civil actions prescribed by law.

Commercial & Financial Matters

The Court hears civil disputes involving commercial transactions, business agreements, recovery of money, banking matters, and contractual obligations that fall within its statutory jurisdiction.

Family & Matrimonial Matters

The District Court exercises jurisdiction over matrimonial proceedings, including divorce, judicial separation, declaration of nullity of marriage, maintenance, custody of children, and related family law matters where provided by law.

Testamentary Jurisdiction

The Court is empowered to hear and determine testamentary cases concerning wills, probate, letters of administration, and the distribution of estates of deceased persons.

Intellectual Property Matters

In certain instances provided by law, the District Court may hear civil actions relating to intellectual property rights, including disputes concerning trademarks, copyrights, and related matters.

Enforcement of Civil Judgments

The Court possesses authority to enforce judgments, decrees, and orders issued in civil proceedings through legally recognized enforcement procedures.

Appellate Process

Judgments and orders delivered by the District Court may be subject to appeal before the Civil Appellate High Court or other superior courts in accordance with the law.
